Contraversy 2

Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 21 February 2023 in Miscellaneous and Portfolio.

Another view with a bit of experimental processing and as people might imagine I find this thing Silly so happy Silly Tuesday

This unusual thing was called the "See Monster", it was created by an organisation called Unboxed that was supported financially by the British government as a "celebration" of Brexit. The See Monster was erected at the Tropicana in Weston-Super-Mare, originally planned to have been ready in July last year ready for the summer holiday season and would stay put until early November. Although that was the intention I don't think those who planned it understood enough about the weather on this part of the English coast, but because of rain, wind and storms we can be susceptible to it was not completed till the end of the holiday season in late September. They were unable to extend the amount of time it stayed there by much and it was open till the 23rd of November.
If you read the publicity about it the See Monster was supposed to demonstrate sustainability. Many people questioned this especially as this construction was a former North Sea oil platform that had to be shipped from its position in the North Sea, stripped, repaired and cleaned in a shipyard in the Netherlands over 12 months, transported from the Netherlands by massive barge halfway around the coast of Britain then lifted into place by an enormous floating crane. As said the intention of See Monster was to inspire people to discuss the sustainable reuse of industrial structures. Martin Green, chief creative officer of Unboxed, said that the installation would "take something that took from the earth and ask it to give back." The installation was purported to be the first example in the world of an offshore platform being repurposed after decommissioning, rather than scrapped.
This unusual and experimental "art" installation, apparently costing an estimated 10.5 million pounds has almost finished being taken down now. I felt this is fitting for this weeks prompt experimental, if people want to know more because as you may imagine there's much more been written about it from Unboxed and their critics a search for See Monster will see more information.

Please excuse me if I don't get to comment people's images some days but I've had to return to a work life rather than become a pensioner as I had planned due cost of living and the tax man wanting a lump of my pension. I am making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

A great PoV that seems to reveal more landscaping than structural members! It's weird how the yellow color disappeared in today's photo. Was there some desaturation?

Fascinating find, superb capture, Doug. I like the contrarian aspects, as if co-existence and a deal seemed unlikely. Technopoly and environment!

this view does not add much to the story or our understanding of the construction, but it is a fine documentation of it

They certainly did a great job having it all balanced and standing upright but I can see how a strong wind or a lot of rain would take it right down. I think that the concept was good.
