Flying across the ground

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 21 July 2014 in Sport & Recreation and Portfolio.

A few shots taken last month at the England v Hong Kong international Polo. Nige and I attended, we had never seen polo played before and were surprised what a fast tough and exciting game it is. The riders appeared more physical with each other than I expected and the ponies were incredibly tough, agile animals that were spectacular to watch.
I had not realised till I began processing these shots how many of them where the ponies were moving so fast their hooves were not touching the ground at times

Please excuse me if I don't get to comment people's images some days but I've had to return to a work life rather than become a pensioner as I had planned due cost of living and the tax man wanting a lump of my pension. I am making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

@Ainsley: Thanks Ainsley. Not so sure I could play the skill of the riders is fantastic but really exciting to watch.

Flying horse - If I understand the story - one of the initial reasons motion pictures were invented was to prove that the horse's feet left the ground completely and so they made a rapid set of photos to prove it. Putting them together they realized they had movies. Not sure if that is true but I remember it from somewhere.

21 Jul 2014 2:30pm

@Bruce: A seem to recollect something like this too

Don from Spokane, United States

It's amazing to see the horses galloping across the field and be caught with all the feet off the ground. Fine shooting.

Excellent composed shot as both ponies appear airborne with no hoofs on the ground. I love how you've incorporated the crowd in the background as they look on.

Full speed! The riders have amazing balance. Brilliant capture. I used to exercise polo ponies, one stopped so sharply I went right over the top of it's head onto the ground, I was okay but not my pride!
