Charlestown Harbour

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 23 March 2013 in Transportation and Portfolio.

Charlestown a small harbour in Cornwall that nearly always has a few square rigged ships in it's dock. This weeks monochrome, tell me what you honestly think, like it or not I'd like to see what you think about it

Canon EOS 500D 1/125 second F/5.6 ISO 200 40 mm

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

a fantastic shot of the old ships & well suited to b&w and the frame that you chose...it's like time has stopped back in early 1900s.

I love th processing in b&w and the vintage feel to this gorgeous little harbour. I saw on the news tonight Cornwall has been badly hit by the storms.

@kiwisa: Yes it's been hit hard

I love these ships and your view of them, bow and stern, really works within this setting. Also I like your border and the high quality of this black and white.

Julie L. Brown from Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

The scene has a timeless look, so I think the treatment works on that level. You had a wide contrast range here-the blacks look blocked up and have no detail.

23 Mar 2013 1:06pm

@Julie L. Brown: Thanks Julie

I like the timeless quality you've given this, tho' I would like to see a bit more detail in the ships. I like the inclusion of the mast in the foreground.

Beautiful and interesting . A nice place for photograph, great image, nice composition.

23 Mar 2013 2:52pm

Slackwater - Don from Spokane, United States

A great scene to shoot. Your exposure and processing has result in a strong, antique looking photo. The deep dark and heavy contrast help with this result. An appealing image.

23 Mar 2013 3:25pm

Christine from Ellemford, United Kingdom

I really like the composition, and as Judy says it is timeless in B&W

23 Mar 2013 3:25pm

Nice one Doug - love the compo but would love to see a little more detail in the centre around the boat's hull and on the right around the boats and harbour wall.... :-)

This is a perfect take on Charlestown - I have some similar shots of these boats that have never looked right but this b&w treatment is a definite answer.

great ... reminds me strongly of an old postcard !!!

26 Mar 2013 6:11pm

Joyce from Montana, United States

Love the tall ships, and this is a very interesting comp with the bright row of white buildings creating a watchful contrast. The ships rest safely in a "corral,"...:-D almost, though I read above that a storm has battered Cornwall, not too severe I hope. Wish I had that distress frame feature to use. It's perfect, and the scene is like time travel. I would like to see more light on the ships hulls is all, but it's a good balance of dark and light despite that. So there!!! Good eye Doug.
