The fastest ?

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 26 January 2013 in Transportation and Portfolio.

At the Great Western Railway Museum in Swindon this steam engine called Caerphilly Castle had the sign the worlds fastest steam train. I'm not sure if it was in it's time but it was a fascinating display as we could not only walk round it but it had a pit beneath so we could walk right under it.

Canon EOS 500D 1/20 second F/3.5 ISO 1600 18 mm

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

It is a great thing that the old technology is retained. Thus we can understand the development of the flow. They were powerful machines, and even more beautiful.

I thought the worlds fastest steam train was the LNER engine 'The Mallard' at 125.88 mph, a record it still holds, though these castle class trains could shift

26 Jan 2013 10:35am

@grouser: I must admit to not knowing much about the record this claims and yes I thought it was The Mallard, perhaps it claimed the record before it

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

Oh a nice viewpoint by the way. Has SWMBO tied you to the tracks? :)

26 Jan 2013 10:36am

@grouser: I won't let her near the rails just in case that happens

Stunning POV - if you hadn't mentioned the pit I would have assumed that you had resumed your slithering ways!

26 Jan 2013 1:21pm

@Jules: This was made to easy for me, perhaps I should keep a spade in my photo kit to dig my own pits, second thoughts slithering is easier until I get told off for dirty clothes !
