Freezing on the streets

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 23 January 2013 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

I just felt so sad to see this poor girl sat there in the cold hoping people would notice her enough to give her a pound or two.

Canon EOS 500D 1/50 second F/5.0 ISO 200 39 mm

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

It is not very fine weather where you come from.

Bettina from Los Angeles, United States

Perhaps that's why there are so many homeless in California/LA. The weather is a little easier to survive.

Great capture Doug, many choose to be blind to our own poverty on our doorsteps and we should all look to ourselves and find something to give. Thank you for reminding me.

Somethings I see far too often in Toronto, and a powerful image, Doug.

I can almost feel her cold, gosh that should be hard...this is somehow a gorgeous image, powerful and great processing/desaturated tones! Excellent framing, it's just right.

touching street scene, doug, unfortunately only all too common nowadays in our "rich" countries ...

i HATE seeing people homeless, I don't have it where I live so much as it's fairly rural. However it greatly affects me when I visit london, etc. I would never give them money though... i'm scared it always feeds a habit. I prefer to buy them a warm drink and some food :)

So quiet street shop....

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

As Christine notes, all the expensive items around....I think we have lost our sensitivity in society....We have it pounded into us that the only reason folks are like this is because they do not want to be any other way....I cannot see where that would be true....I think that is the "excuse" used by those who have all they need and just do not care enouogh about anyone else. Sometimes people get into a hole and just simply do not know how to get out....I know I am struck every time I see a scene like this - a person in trouble or need or misery or all three...I don't kniow what the answer is, I really don't ...But I DO know that if we continue to "ignore" this issue and sweep it under a rug, we are harming oursel;ves and feeding the uncaring demons as well....Thank you for this, Doug!

23 Jan 2013 5:33pm

@Denny Jump Photo: The scene seem all the sadder when I noticed this huddle was a girl, our society just does not do enough

Ruthiebear from Titusville, NJ, United States

A sad documentary image. I think these poor ones become invisible to us, sadly. I like your use of selective color.

It is sad and she looks so cold. I think it is interesting how the two that are walking are looking down to avoid eye contact. A very powerful image.

There is nothing as cold as loneliness,a sad sad scene, and i'm afraid it's one that is on the increase in this country.

wonderful capture, Doug - but such a sad sight ... especially when the temperatures are so bitterly cold

23 Jan 2013 6:57pm

Don from Spokane, United States

A sad street scene. I feel for those who find themselves without housing and don't wish to live this way. Sometimes community support to programs that can provide temporary housing are insufficient in numbers or length of stay to meet the problem. Sad, too, is the fact that mental health problems are no longer recognized as causing folks to wind up on the street.

23 Jan 2013 7:18pm

Eric Cousineau from Sherwood Park, Canada

Definitely a sad commentary on our society today! Well seen and captured Doug! ;-)

This is definitely not a good time to be on the streets. I have got to confess I'm always reluctant to give people actual money but happy to buy them a coffee or a pasty etc from Greggs.

gerard1948 from Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Very strong image, I like a lot. It's true that it's sad to see people in the street. I do not know how it works in England but on the continent, and here á Santiago, young people begging in the street, but very often they are Résaux who exploit them, then what is the solution?
Have a good evening.
