Down the Alley

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 4 October 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I saw this alley as we were walking round Rye and it captured my imagination.
My second monochrome this week, let me know what you really think I'm interested to know.

Please excuse me if I don't get to comment people's images some days but I've had to return to a work life rather than become a pensioner as I had planned due cost of living and the tax man wanting a lump of my pension. I am making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

A beautiful black and white, it reminds me of an old movie. Beautiful composition, great shot.

Good use of mono to match in with the lamp, and nicely framed to get the lamp in between the narrow side walls. It's a positive from me.

Nazzareno from Rome, Italy

I like the point of view of the composition and the line of the road, but for my photos I use a higher contrast

I like your view down the alley to the old gas light type of lamp post. Mono is a great choice.

I love the lamp as the centre of the image....nice work.

It is a curious picture. The composition gives great prominence to the lamppost ... It seems that this put there to keep out the stroller ... Good! Best regards, Adela

I'm not so sure about the narrowness at the top making the lamp looked squashed but i like the idea and want to see around that corner

It is nice that this narrow alley lead to a beautiful old lamp

A very good sense of "you are here" comes from your framing, and I love the black and white.

you have framed the street lamp well using the alley, though it seems to lack a little in contrast the deeper you go. Reminds me of an album cover but cant think which?

Good range of tones here Doug, just lacks a person (or dog).

Yes, you've captured the feeling of putting us right there!
If I rush through it quickly, will I be safe (in the dark)?
I too, want to see what's 'round the bend.

Odd comment. The shot looks like it's a "Quad tone" i.e. black, dark grey, light grey and white. Is that a)Just me eyes b)Something you were going for c) Just an odd effect?

4 Oct 2012 6:17pm

@CElliottUK: Not an odd comment and I appreciate people's honesty, so thanks Chris. I'll admit to playing with the tones till I came up with something I liked, although I appreciate this could be open to interpretation, but this seemed to work for me.

I love the details - the shapes and textures - in this image. The treatment really highlights them so well.

Very good shot, excellent in monochrome! It gives the impression that Charly Chaplin can appear any moment near that lantern.

4 Oct 2012 7:34pm

Prem from SoCal, United States

this is great in mono, perfect and the alley looks so still.

Sherlock Holmes could burst around the corner any second!

4 Oct 2012 8:27pm

I like how the dark leads to the light. The b&w really brings out the detail of the bricks. The alley creates quite an atmosphere of something is about to happen!

Joyce from Montana, United States

Can be sub titled, "bricks" -- I like the lamp as your destination whether you meant it or not to be. It is certainly a gothic feeling which I like. I thought, Sherlock is nearby in disguise sleuthing out a crime. I am adding it to my first mix. :-D

4 Oct 2012 10:25pm

RBL from Oxford, United States

Great mood ... love the deep dark shadows and narrowness of the alley! Fantastic b/w!

4 Oct 2012 11:30pm

Carol from Leamington, Canada

I like it Doug, there seems to be a nice balance of light here. The brick on the right sets it off nicely and it just continues from that point. The lamp at the end of the lane is a bonus. This works well in monochrome, I like it!

For some reason this reminds me of where Jack the Ripper may have hung out. Spooky
