Helping the Fairies fly

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 30 August 2012 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

My eldest Granddaughter stayed with us over last weekend and we had a few walks to the park. She was fascinated by blowing the seeds off the dandelions and I was captured by watching her excitement in blowing them and watching them fly away.

My weekly personal monochrome challenge. As usual please feel free to critique, good or bad I don't mind just tell me what you honestly think

Canon EOS 500D 1/100 second F/11.0 ISO 100 55 mm

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

Critique time. Is at all possible, crop to include the eyes. Take away the eyes, and you've taken away someone's window to their soul. Obviously, if you never shot the eyes in the first place......Alternatively, make sure there's no hint of eyes, and focus / crop on the hands

30 Aug 2012 8:44am

@CElliottUK: Thanks Chris, I appreciate your constructive critique, this shot was not cropped, as the intention when I took it was to capture her lips blowing the seeds. I know what you mean and I did have one including her eyes, but when I reviewed the shot I went for this as it did not detract from the intended subject as Carol suggested.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

To take Chris' critique a little further, you could cheat and add in here eyes from a different picture.

30 Aug 2012 8:52am

@Curly: Thanks Curly, I may go through some of my other shots and put another including her eyes, but as I said to Chris my intended subject was her blowing the seeds.

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

... our colleagues, always his English humor ... I think maybe it would be better to see the whole eye. But the urgency of the moment compositional limits our sense ... happens to me more than once ... The gesture is wonderful ... and very spontaneous! Best regards! Adela

Carol from Leamington ON, Canada

The more you show of her face might take the focus away from her blowing the fairies from the dandelion.... since that is the title of your photo! But you know what, she is such a sweetie that I don't think it would really matter! It's so cute how she has her lips pursed and the stray strands of hair.... a 'granddaughter moment'... so precious!

What a smiler. Makes us all become instant kids for a moment. Love it's intimate close up to feel the breeze in her hair, and the soft pffft of her breath gently releasing the fairies.
