The Mump

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 21 May 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Burrow Mump just outside the village of Burrowbridge on the Somerset levels has the ruins of St Michaels church on top. This mump or hill is natural and rises from the levels approximately 79 feet (24 metres). Archaeologists have found evidence of early Roman and Norman occupation dating as far back as the 9th century. Parts of the church which is now disused and roofless dates back to the 15th century and is a grade 2 listed building

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

Nice frame, nice name. Any evidence that this was a pre Christian site? Often the reason for St Michael's presence

21 May 2012 10:15am

@grouser: Nothing documented, but as most of the Somerset levels are reclaimed marshland and neolithic causeways are sometimes discovered between high points it's quite likely

GJC from Kyoto, Japan

stunning composition - love the sea of gold, the church on the hill is idyllic, just a shame it is slowly falling prey to the 'evils' of entropy

Gorgeous shot Doug - and the information is intriguing. In my southern land a mump is 1/2 a childhood illness causing large cheeks! :)

21 May 2012 1:41pm

@Bron: Fortunately mumps is an illness I managed to avoid as a child, although my little brother had it pretty bad

Gorgeous capture with the sea of wild flowers, and green layers, and a spotless sky and perfect day! The church is far off yet still the star. I bet that bump it's on is man made it's so perfect. I read that the locations of these great historic churches were never casual, but placed on meridians, or ley lines -- or ancient holy places. Right up there with the best of mysterious British history. Love it.
