Hannah 3

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 23 April 2012 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Last one from my day learning about lighting techniques. This time using a softbox slightly to the left of Hannah and a tight beam from a snood to light her hair.
It was a great day and I learned a lot more about other ways of using a flash rather than just sticking it on the camera on auto, and recommend it if you ever have the opportunity to spend some time learning and having a go

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

Christine from Ellemford, United Kingdom

You certainly came away with some lovely portraits. I find the bracelets distracting in this frame, just a personal thought

23 Apr 2012 6:39am

@Christine: Thanks Christine. She was a little punkish (if that's a word) in her dress I actually cloned out her piercing which was just below her lip and did wonder about the bracelets.

Heinz from Hamm, Germany

Für mich das beste aus dieser Serie. Ausgewogene Belichtung.

Nigel from Avening, United Kingdom

This is a nice frame Doug - just one little point - her eyes seem a bit dull, there's no sparkle. What do you think ? .................. You can always tell me to mind my own business if you like. :-)

23 Apr 2012 7:14am

@Nigel: Thanks Nige, all criticism gratefully received. I think you're right and there seemed to be more sparkle in her eyes when she looked slightly away from camera.

Farnaaz from Iran, Iran

All the details ... sweet and clever .. come from nature .

Joyce from United States

Thanks for the lesson Doug. She is a great subject and you have done well with her. I really appreciate your "show and tell," and now I am accountable for the new info. Gulp. Actually I try not to use my flash and am ready for some fun experimenting too. Keep up the good work and keep on sharing your clever images.

23 Apr 2012 2:07pm

@Joyce: Thanks Joyce. I must admit to having been the same with flash often complaining about it's harshness but this session taught me that it doesn't have to be, and even using one light off camera through a softbox makes so much difference

RBL from Oxford, United States

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

My wife hates it when I adjust the eyes and so while I know that that degree of editing is not for all, here I'm with Nigel and though a nice portrait I would've sharpened the eyes, whitened the the whites and softened the skin tones...just a little.

23 Apr 2012 7:57pm

@Ted: I thought about it but have never tried editing the eyes, something else to learn. Thanks Ted

tataray from france, France

Ohhh magnifique.
Des yeux superbes.)

Jerry from Aberdeen, United States

I think it is a rather good photo, but framed just a little too tight for me personally. You received a lot of good constructive comments on here and that gives you plenty to think about as you work with new lighting techniques in the future. Looking at the reflections in her eyes I thought this was a natural light shot, but then I read your introduction. I do like this lighting style - really neat.

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

A beautiful image and a beautiful smile ... Magnificent lights friend! A hug, Adela

23 Apr 2012 9:14pm

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

have a look at Scott Kelby's books who talks you through the edit...or I cheat and use a plug-in. Curly will tell you he don't pay (even though he has more magic wands than Harry Potter!)... but this works for me.

23 Apr 2012 9:28pm

Michael Fresh from Chester, United Kingdom

The highlights on her hair show up well, also the softer front light is evident being more flattering. Very nice portrait work.

Lovely portrait! This has been very interesting. How different lighting can change the whole portrait. I have really enjoyed it!
