Hannah in half-light

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 22 April 2012 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

From our camera club's photo shoot last weekend where one of the members gave up their valuable time to show us different lighting techniques. This time a colour shot, and just one flash in a softbox positioned to the side of Hannah's face.
Models are not my usual photographic subjects, but I must admit to having really enjoyed the topic, while learning a quite a lot about how to light using just one or two flashguns.

Making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

CElliottUK from Reading, United Kingdom

Now, I don't do portraits at all, so WTF do I know, but just a weenie bit of bounce on the right might be beneficial...maybe...?

22 Apr 2012 7:27am

@CElliottUK: No you are right, but this was early in the day and we were using a single light and moving the model around to see the effect.

Shaahin Bahremand from Tehran, Iran

This pose and lighting really accentuates her beautiful eyes! Nicely captured Doug! ;-)

22 Apr 2012 12:33pm

@Eric Cousineau: Thanks. It was helpful to have a pretty and experienced model.

Joyce from United States

I agree with Eric. Like the way her hair falls, and great eyes look directly into the viewer's presence. And you do have a good eye for representing the model in her perfect light, and pose. Very good portrait.

22 Apr 2012 12:43pm

@Joyce: Thanks, as I said to Eric it helped that the model knew what she was doing, but it was surprising how just moving the camera model or light slightly had such a change in the final image

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

Another good one, the softbox does a good all round job.

22 Apr 2012 1:14pm

@Curly: It was great, just another bit of kit I now need, the question is how do I convince the better half !

Dimitrios from ATHENS, Greece

Ted from South Wales, United Kingdom

if I thought yesterday's lighting was a bit harsh...this is spot on and the result is a warm, flattering portrait.

22 Apr 2012 3:19pm

@Ted: Thanks, one more on tomorrow with slightly different lighting again

Lena from San Francisco, United States

Jypyä Pop from Turku, Finland

Great lights and colors.

22 Apr 2012 7:25pm

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

I do not care too much the portrait with model ... but I recognize a great value ... in their study of light. I actually served it when studying drawing. It is very important as the light falls on the human body to make a good drawing that has volume ... Nice shot and work! Best regards, Adela
