Kilve

Posted by
Doug (Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom) on 13 January 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Kilve is a small village in Somerset with a rocky beach on the shores of the River Severn estuary, it's recorded by English Nature as a Sight of Special Scientific Interest. The reasons for this are the interesting geological formations, the diverse flora and the fossils that have been found there.

Please excuse me if I don't get to comment people's images some days but I've had to return to a work life rather than become a pensioner as I had planned due cost of living and the tax man wanting a lump of my pension. I am making an effort to return to AM3 after a bit of an absence, it's really nice to see photo's from all contributors and I will try to comment when I can. If I offer criticism I do so only to help and I do not wish to cause offence. My photography tends to be from my travels, as well as my passion which is wildlife and landscape. I hope you enjoy what you see.
Thanks for your comments I'm really grateful for them and welcome constructive feedback.

Skyriani from Nelson, New Zealand

Looks almost like pavement. How sorry I am not to have visited Kilve when we traveled in Somerset!
Is Kilve a Norse name?

13 Jan 2012 5:26am

@Skyriani: It's not the easiest place to find, a little village halfway between Bridgwater and Minehead and the beach is down a small lane from the main road. According to Wikipedia the village was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Clive, prossibly meaning cliff.

The texture of the stone gives the feeling like this has been paved with cobble stones! Nicely captured Doug! ;-)

franz from Baden, Austria

absolutely amazing texture and structure in the rocks here! looks as if someone had deliberately paved this beach! could these be the eroded stumps of basalt columns, i wonder ?!?

13 Jan 2012 1:08pm

@franz: Not basalt, it's limestone but tomorrow's shot may give a little more understanding of the fascinating geology of Kilve

Adela Fonts from Barcelona, Spain

An image that has impressed me. I am a lover of geology ... I have a good collection of rocks and fossils. I've been thrilled with this landscape of stone ... It seems wrought by human beings ... I would love to visit personally. I note the place! Thank you for your explanation. Very interesting! Thanks you very much! Glad you like it, Best regards, Adela

christine from Oelegem, Belgium

Very special and interesting. I think it would also be nice to use only the lower half of the picture with only the pavement-like stones.

13 Jan 2012 7:05pm

@christine: I considered doing that but wanted to show the scale of the formations and the juxtaposition of them within the environment
